Kathy's journal notes:

Jon & Pam at the Bora-Bora airport
Jon & Pam at the Bora-Bora airport

Saturday March 20 -- Arrived in Papeete at 6:30 -- long wait in customs -- tiare flowers, Pam asking one of the givers which ear for married women (so we could do it right) -- left, but not a big deal any more.

Problem going through security to Air Tahiti flight to Bora Bora -- the insulin syringe in my purse looked suspicious in the X-Ray machine.  I explained to the guard who opened my purse "Je suis diabethique" and "C'est pour medicine."  He wanted to see my card.  He communicated that he too was diabetic, and even showed me his card.  I showed him the prescription label on the insulin bottle, but not good enough.  Same for my MedicAlert bracelet.  Finally I pulled out the MedicAlert card that I keep in my purse in case I need to update my record (that medics can access by calling the number on my bracelet).  Ah ha!  C'est parfait!

Flew to Bora Bora, trip calm enough for Pam, beautiful view of the shades of blue within the lagoon.  Met in the airport with big hugs from Sue and Jon.  Ferry to Vaitape.  Left luggage with Jon and went grocery shopping, walking a ways down the busy two-lane road.  Sue rejoicing on behalf of kids that I am not in fact a vegetarian.  Leg of lamb, beef chunks for stewing, fresh tuna, veggies, veggies, veggies, baguettes that wilted into funny shapes on the way back.  Bought a bunch of four pineapples from a stand on side of road -- woman settling for money Sue offered (even though less than "list").  Dinghy to Ocelot, first experience of riding in the dinghy on the plane.  Brie and baguette for lunch.  Anchored by a big motu with Bora Bora Nui hotel.  Pam and Jon snorkeled by a green marker -- Sue, Kathy, and Chris going later for Kathy's first snorkel adventure ever.  Clear water, lots of small colorful fish.  Kathy got the hang of breathing, but problems with foggy mask.  Learned how to wash hair in the lagoon and rinse off with minimal water from the deck shower.  Dinghy to little motu to look for shells, leaving all the ones that walked (i.e., hosted hermit crabs) behind.  That meant a very small haul.  Rum punch for adults (J&B scotch for Kathy) -- then lamb cooked by Chris.  Stars & talk that night.
