The fish that got away. It was THAT big!

It was THAT big!

29 June 2007, 840 miles from the Seychelles

Dear Friends and Family,

Just a quick note to let you all know we're still out here.  The forecasts all say we should have 15 knots of wind, but the reality is 25 knots with squalls to 35!  So much for forecasts...  Seas are still pretty big and lumpy, not very regular at all, but they're coming from behind us now, so a bit easier to take.  Still, we'll be glad to get to the Seychelles.

At noon today we were at 5°30'S 69°56'E, or 143 nautical miles from Chagos with 868nm still to go.  Our plan is to track along about 5°30S to about 61°E, then turn slightly north and head directly for the Seychelles.  Staying a bit south of the direct line should keep us out of contrary currents.

30 June 2007, 680nm from Seychelles

Dear Friends and Family,

Just to let you know that after a rather grueling night of high winds and squalls, things have improved today.  We spent all last night with a triple-reefed main and most of our jib rolled up, but today conditions improved a bit and we've shaken out 2 reefs and rolled out the jib.  The rain-squalls aren't as violent, the seas have calmed down a bit, and we've had blue skies for much of the day.

At noon today we were at 5°30'S 67°13'E, or 304 nautical miles from Chagos, with 709nm still to go.  We're all fine, Amanda baked some new peanut-butter cookies and spirits improve when the sun shines.

BTW, please don't worry if we don't send these out every day - radio propagation is difficult right now so we may not be able to send.

Fair winds and calm seas -- Jon, Sue and Amanda Hacking
